Frank Chimero on getting unstuck while designing his own lecture poster

A 2018 essay: a designer stuck on a self-portrait poster found the way through by naming the talk and working once through, cleanly.

WHAT THEY DID

For his “The Eye Knows” lecture in Memphis, Chimero first got stuck on a self-focused version, was told by a friend he was overthinking it, taped slides and references to his wall, named the talk to anchor the image, adapted a picture from his slide deck, and finished in one sitting.

HOW IT WENT

He says the result captured his attitude to design. No outcome metrics; it’s a reflection.

WORTH KNOWING

From 2018. He notes the one-sitting approach suits small self-initiated work, not collaborative or long projects.
