StyleDrop: Google research on copying a visual style from a single reference image

A 2023 research demo shows text-to-image output matched to the style of one reference image, from watercolor to 3D renders.

Research demonstration, not a product

WHAT THEY DID

Google Research authors built StyleDrop on the Muse model. It learns a style from one reference image by fine-tuning under 1% of the model’s parameters, improving with human or automated feedback, and can combine a chosen subject with a chosen style.

HOW IT WENT

The authors report it outperforms earlier methods in their own comparisons.

WORTH KNOWING

The page doesn’t discuss artist consent or attribution, and some style examples appear to use well-known painters’ work. For illustrators, it shows how little reference material style imitation can need.
